4. KA TENSE MARKER

The past narrative exists only in the affirmative. The infix KA is placed between the subject prefix and the verb stem.

Nikafanya and I made

Ukafanya and you made

Akafanya/kafanya and he/she made

Tukafanya and we made

Mkafanya and you made

Wakafanya and they made

The past narrative is used for narration. It is usually preceded by a verb in the simple past LI. Most of the time the preposition Na “and” isn’t used.

Nilitoka nyumbani, nikaenda mjini, nikakutana na rafiki, nikarejea nyumbani.

I came out of the house, I went to town and I met a friend, then I came back home.

At the 3rd person of singular, the subjet prefix is often dropped.

Kaenda nae maguguni, kamrejeshea maiti.

He went with her to the bush and brought her back as a corpse.

The infix KA can also be used after an imperative verb. In this case, the last vowel of Bantu verbs will be –E.

Nenda ukanunue matunda.
